The nagura or buffer stone that is included with this stone will also help you create a slurry that aids with sharpening and polishing.

This whetstone has been baked and is porous so had better to be soaked in water until the bubbles stop surfacing, but you can use it by splashing the water. You will feel the difference when its soaked or splashed.
